Hideki Sakamoto

PROFILE.

Hideki Sakamoto

Sakamoto was born in 1972, Tokyo. His father is a guitarist and the mother is a singer of Hawaiian music. He was raised on classical music and started to learn the piano since the age of 4. He started to compose music on computer on BASIC at the age of 12, and deepened his interest on game music. Later he developed an interest for digital expression of classic music using Macintosh.

His debut as a consumer game composer in 1998 with the game called “Juggernaut”. His work was widely ranged from composing, manipulating, directing, planning and scenario writing, and was involved in more than 30 games.

In 2004, he founded Noisycroak Co., Ltd., and became CEO. In 2005,“Shinobido: Way of the Ninja” was released with the game’s main theme music being composed by him. This game proved his talent and attracted the attention of wide range of publishers and developers.

He then got involved in many of the well-known games “Yakuza 2” (2007), “Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness” (2007), “Yakuza Kenzan” (2008), “echochrome” (2008), “Aquanaut's Holiday: Hidden Memories” (2008), “428: Fusasareta Shibuya de” (2009), “Yakuza 3” (2009), “No Heroes Allowed!” (2010), “Patchwork Heroes” (2010) ,“Dance Dance Revolution”(2010) - he presented music “Private Eye” on atomsoak's name - and “echochrome ii” (2010). His music widely covers not only classic but also rock, pop, dance music and ethnic music.

“echochrome ii”, the longest game music ever written, is currently in the process of going into the Guinness Book of Records. This music's recording was broadcasted live on Ustream, “HidekiSakamotoLive” and attracted huge attention. (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/hidekisakamotolive)

His composing style relies on the beauty of melody rather than the whole composition of music and how the main theme combines is counted rather than harmony of the whole music. This made his music creating strange modulations which is now regarded as his music characteristics.

Use of social media is his characteristics and from early stages, he has produced the live broadcast programs “Otoya”(NicoNicoLive) “HidekiSakamotoLive”(Ustream) and “Noisemen” (Ustream), which he moderates by himself and is attracting the attention of other music composers.
